Find Your Next Great Read at a Bookstore in Sacramento

Do you enjoy relaxing with a good book?

If so, there are many independent bookstores within an easy drive from our apartments near Sacramento State where you can peruse through stacks of bestsellers, autobiographies, cookbooks, and more.

Here are a few favorites:

Named after founder Nellie Beer, Beers Books has welcomed readers since 1936. Nellie began her career by working as a bookstore clerk and was one of the charter members of the Sacramento Book Lovers Club. The shop has only had four owners, and it features both used and new books. Unwanted titles are purchased daily, offering visitors an ever-changing selection. The shelves are stocked with all genres, and the store is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Called one of the West Coast's premier bookstores, Time Tested offers thousands of titles. It's found inside a turn-of-the-century building and features a cozy reading nook where visitors can enjoy their new books. The shop strives to provide the best literary experience, and it's proud to be the official bookseller for Capital Public Radio: CapRadio Reads. The selection includes everything from rare finds to new releases, as well as vinyl records.

Throughout the year, Time Tested also hosts fun events. Highlights include readings, book signings, and live musical performances.

With a love of books, Jim and Joyce Crawford knew they had to open a bookstore that fostered a love of reading. That's how Crawford's was born, and it features both new and used books. A new couple began running the store in 2018, and they state that they're thrilled to keep this beloved shop open. The shelves are full of mysteries, westerns, historical romance novels, and so much more.
