Just eleven minutes from our apartments near Sac State is the city's leading cultural institution for contemporary arts and ideas.
We are talking about the Verge Center for the Arts, and it features resident artists, rotating exhibitions, and exciting classes.
During your visit, you can meet the artists and learn about their creative processes. Those that may be in their studios include:
Born in Sydney, Australia, Elizabeth Corkery now calls Sacramento home. Her work is an inherent contradiction of fine arts as it incorporates printmaking, digital media, and sculpture. Elizabeth exhibits her art around the world and holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cornell University.
When Ianna Nova Frisby isn't at the center, she can be found teaching at Sacramento City College. Ceramics is her primary medium, and she's inspired by objects that represent the past, present, and future. Ianna has a penchant for learning and enjoys stepping outside of her comfort zone.
Gioia Fonda is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in drawing, painting, sewing, and photography. As a dedicated member of Sacramento's art community, she also serves as a curator and jurist. Gioia studied at the California College of the Arts and enjoys sharing her passion with others.
If you would like to bring out your inner artist, try one of these exciting classes:
Intro to Risograph is a printmaking class that highlights the ins and outs of the Risograph machine. This unique machine looks like a photocopier and works as a screen printer. The instructor will also cover design, file, prep, and paper selection. Students will create an edition of two-color prints, and receive a guide to this art form. Don't forget to bring a photograph that's up to 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
Learn how to make bowls, mugs, and planters during this exciting introductory class. Students leave knowing how to throw, shape, and trim objects on the wheel. This session includes demonstrations, and the necessary tools are provided.
